When I chose to attend EMU, I was looking for a school with the following criteria: one that had my program (music therapy) and a good music school, offered me significant need-based and merit-based financial aid, and was relatively close to home. As I experienced First Four (a freshman orientation program), I began to realize the emphasis this university puts on the excellence and opportunities for students. "Exhibit your sense of wonder", the provost said to the class of 2017 at Convocation. Since then, I have been nothing but encouraged and inspired to do just that.
As a student in the Honors College, I have been treated with exceptional respect and care. From early registration to smaller classes with top-notch faculty, to the prospect of being able to perform research alongside faculty, the Honors College is the way to go.
As a music therapy major, I started off in my program from the first semester. So my college experience looks quite different from most. I will be fulfilling gen. ed. requirements up until the last semester of my time at EMU as well as requirements within my major. Music therapy, which a research-based practice of using music in a therapeutic setting to accomplish specific non-musical goals in a variety of domains (physical, cognitive,emotional, social-emotional, etc.), is a prominently up-and-coming field. There are under 100 programs in the nation and only 2 in the state of Michigan. In the field, EMU's music therapy program is sending out some of the most prepared professionals in our field. This is something that EMU should celebrate.
At EMU, I have been poured into by a variety of academic and administrative faculty, both inside and outside my program. EMU is one of Michigan's lesser-known academic and research wonders. EMU has an opportunity for just about everyone who is willing to try. Read MoreRead Less
