As I experienced First Four (a freshman orientation program), I began to realize the emphasis this university puts on the excellence and opportunities for students. "Exhibit your sense of wonder", the provost said to the class of 2017 at Convocation. Since then, I have been nothing but encouraged and inspired to do just that.

As a student in the Honors College, I have been treated with exceptional respect and care. From early registration to smaller classes with top-notch faculty, to the prospect of being able to perform research alongside faculty, the Honors College is the way to go.

As a music therapy major, I started off in my program from the first semester. So my college experience looks quite different from most. I will be fulfilling gen. ed. requirements up until the last semester of my time at EMU as well as requirements within my major. Music therapy, which a research-based practice of using music in a therapeutic setting to accomplish specific non-musical goals in a variety of domains (physical, cognitive, emotional, social-emotional, etc.), is a prominently up-and-coming field. There are under 100 programs in the nation and only 2 in the state of Michigan. In the field, EMU's music therapy program is sending out some of the most prepared professionals in our field. This is something that EMU should celebrate.

At EMU, I have been poured into by a variety of academic and administrative faculty, both inside and outside my program. EMU is one of Michigan's lesser-known academic and research wonders. EMU has an opportunity for just about everyone who is willing to try.

Becoming a member of the Honors College was the best decision I made at EMU, and I feel incredibly fortunate that I am able to work with so many talented and caring people there. Being a transfer student, I do not think I could have made as many meaningful connections at EMU, or been put in a better position for academic success. It is truly a family community who looks out for each other and wants the very best for its members and EMU.

The Faculty, Staff, and even students here all place value in establishing personal relationships with me and I know that I am in a place where others honestly care about who I truly am as a person. Choosing to come to Eastern has been so much more than simply selecting a university to attend in which I will receive my degree and continue on. Choosing to attend Eastern has proved to be an amazing life choice in which I chose to attend a University that not only supports me academically, but also challenges, encourages, and inspires me on regular basis, provides me with unimaginable opportunities, aids in the cultivation of worthwhile friendships, and embodies a spirit of true community. The relationships and experiences that I have had so far at Eastern have been life changing and I am excited to continue to grow in all aspects of my life, all the while knowing that the EMU family that I have gained will always be there with me along the way. I applied for Eastern the June before my freshman year of college. It was super late, but I still did not know what college was right for me. I got an email two weeks later saying that I had been accepted, but this letter of acceptance was different from the rest. The admissions representative that emailed me helped me get registered for orientation right away and answered all of my questions. The rest was history.
At orientation I met new friends, signed up for classes, and toured the campus.
Everything about it felt so right.
From start to finish, my freshman year brought out so many new opportunities for me. Now as a sophomore I have established great relationships with professors in my major and I am an RA in the a residence hall. This year I am on a committee to host a conference at EMU, I have had plenty of chances to volunteer within the community, and I will be traveling with Eastern Faculty to California to extend my knowledge in Fashion Merchandising.
Eastern has brought so many opportunities to the forefront for me to chase after. Plus, three of my sisters now go here and my family always feels welcome on campus. I am so lucky to have my Eastern Michigan Community because I never get lost in the crowd here.

My name is Hallee Kansman and I am a senior at EMU studying Biology with a minor in Zoology. I am an Honors student and a student-athlete with the Women's Soccer team. At EMU, I have experienced excellent courses, close bonds with professors and fellow students and fantastic opportunities to excel in your field of study.

I am currently involved in undergraduate research and an Honors thesis in biology. This experience has enabled me to express some of the most fascinating topics in science while working alongside a faculty advisor and all at the same time becoming closer with the Honors college community.

As an athlete, I am able to bleed Green and White. It has been a joy-ride playing for and representing the university. I am honored to be a part of something that we truly consider to be a community within itself.

Within the honors college I have had the pleasure of serving as a mentor to incoming freshman, be a part of the academic-athletic advisory council and aided in competitions such as the Presidential scholarship competition. I have also had the opportunity to be a part of Leadershape 2014, which was an unforgettable experience with never-ending possibilities and unbreakable friendships.

I am very honored to attend a university that allows for diversity and creativity. I have great appreciation because I believe it has made me into the person I am today. EMU is truly extraordinary.

My name is Jaylon Sims. I am senior studying Music Education (voice) and considering a minor in German Literature and Language.
As is true of most incoming college students, I had no idea of what to expect. I was excited but very anxious at the same time. My first day of on campus in August of 2011 is a blur. I remember leaving church early on Sunday morning; I remember buying last minute supplies for Bed, Bath, and Beyond; I remember arriving in the middle of the marching band move-in hustle; and I remember being completely exhausted at the end of the day. However, what happened the following morning I remember quite well.
I left my room in Downing Hall and went searching for the student center, where I was told I could purchase breakfast. I ended up somewhere between Best and Wise in a state of confusion when I came across a man.
I called out, “Do you know where the student center is?”
The man informed me that I was walking in the wrong direction. He pointed me in the right direction, and I thanked him and began to follow his directions. As I began to move on, the man called for me to wait. He introduced himself as Larry Gates, the director of Dining Services. He told me to follow him. He said that the dining hall had prepared breakfast for the football players and that it wouldn’t be a problem if I ate before they arrived. From this moment on, I knew Eastern Michigan University was the right place for me, and this thought has not changed.
The Eastern Michigan University Marching Band, The Pride of the Peninsula, was my entry into the EMU community. I value and cherish the friends and memories that I made to this day. The Fusion First Four proved to be just as important in my social adjustment. It was during new student orientation that I made friendships that hold strong to this day. My New Student Orientation Assistant’s (NSOA’s) inspired me and many members from my group to assistant the following year. Sophomore year, the Downing Hall Graduate Hall Director and my resident advisors (RA) inspired me to become an RA the next year, a position which has helped me to grow professionally and interpersonally.
The Eastern Michigan University Honors College is my lighthouse for knowledge and understanding. My two favorite honors classes were Intro to Cultural Anthropology with Professor Cerroni-Long and Multicultural Children’s Literature with Professor Ramona Caponegro. I remember my freshman year common read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I remember how sincerely passionate the professor was about the piece of literature. This has been my experience with all EMU professors, honors and non-honors.
The Eastern Michigan University Department of Music and Dance is an organization rich in musical excellence and history. The Eastern Michigan University Department of Music of Dance is my primary professional instructor and also my family. The EMU Department of Music and Dance has provided me experiences including but not limited to performing, teaching, composing, orchestrating, and collaborating with other musicians. Many professors have invested in me professionally and personally. I am true blessed and grateful to have such experienced and proficient professors to call my teachers.
My time at Eastern Michigan University has been challenging, and sometimes, I got lost. However, when that happened, there was always someone there, a professor, a mentor, and or a friend, to point me in the right direction. And through overcoming this challenges, I have grown as a student, as a future educator, and as a human being.

After just a week of being here at Eastern I changed my mind completely! I came out of my shell and became the person I always was on the inside. I have gotten myself involved in EMU Greek Life and I am enjoying every minute. It is the little personal things that I love the most about being at Eastern. It is the days spent laughing and the long nights spent studying with the people I love. Being in the honors college makes me feel like I am a part of a smaller community within EMU. The honors classes are so small that you really get to know your piers and professors. Almost all of the people I have become close with I have met through the honors college. I am so glad I chose Eastern Michigan University I couldn't imagine my life any other way!Read MoreRead Less
