I’m grateful that we ultimately closed on our home, but based on our experience, I would not recommend Rocket Mortgage.
Throughout the process, there were several points where we should have been given clearer guidance about what was actually verified, what was still outstanding, and what we should wait to do until financing was confirmed. Early on, we were provided a Verified Approval Letter for our first offer, but later learned that key pieces had not actually been verified. When it came time to lock in the numbers, they changed multiple times.
Our second offer turned into a short-sale transaction, which already came with additional complexity and uncertainty. Because my wife was scheduled to return from maternity leave, timing mattered, and we made that clear. I believe our financial verification should have been completed much earlier. Instead, the process dragged out and we were asked to go back to her HR department three separate times for additional information or documentation.
What was most frustrating was the lack of ownership when these issues came up. The explanation was generally that the VA required something or that additional documentation was needed. I understand that VA loans have requirements and that lenders do not control every part of the process. What I expected from our loan officer was proactive communication about those requirements, accurate information about where our approval actually stood, and acknowledgment when something could have been handled better.
Ultimately, the loan closed and we purchased our home, and I appreciate everyone who helped get it across the finish line. But the experience created unnecessary stress during an already complicated transaction and significantly reduced my confidence in the process.
